A True Magic in My Literacy

When I began my studies in junior high school, I was not good at writing. In primary school, I used to write every composition in the same form as a diary that the structure was loose and content was simple. During that time, teachers neglected students’ training in writing, resulting in my later failure.

With little knowledge about writing, I was beaten in the first writing class of the junior high school. I can clearly remember that our teacher asked us to write a fiction story before the class, to test our abilities and develop our imaginations. I was shocked when the teacher criticized my story as a disaster of imagination. She said that the characters in my story were made up of pieces of paper instead of flesh and blood and the plot is too ludicrous to believe. It was my first Waterloo in literacy but the situation did not improve and I was at the very edge of failing this subject. At that time, I felt that my world turned grey and people were laughing at my poor grade in writing.

It was my thirteenth birthday when I met the turn of my literacy path. I received a series of Harry Potter from my uncle as my birthday present. I had been a fan of Harry Potter for a long time, but it was my first time to read the story in the books. It was in my preschool period when I watched the movie of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone on TV and began to be interested in this series. However, as I read the book after watching the movie, I found the words were much duller than the film. Maybe it was a sign, which I did not realize, implying that I had no talent in literacy. I had just read over the first paragraph before I gave up it. For this time, I would like to restart my reading, thinking that it could not annoy me more than my poor writing ability. Until then, I had never imagined how this reading would affect my future.

The author, J.K. Rowling, used many pages to describe the Dursleys, showing their bad tempers and how stubborn they were to be purely normal. It was a little boring reading about Mr. Dursley’s way to work, but when I got up to the appearance of Dumbledore, I realized that Rowling was succeeded in shaping a boring person. I could not help thinking that how did Rowling demonstrate his personality. After I reviewed this part, I found that there was a contrast between Mr. Dursley and the environment. Rowling made up a happy atmosphere that wizards hugged muggles and set off meteors, however, Dursley just hated and cursed these. Then, I realized that contrasts may help me to shape characters. As I continued my reading, I met the famous Albus Dumbledore. I found that the book described him as a wise old man in a childish mood. Rowling did not use any long and sophisticated sentences to fit children’s habits. I have also learned that a character can be shaped through his appearance, outfit, and postures. Unfortunately, my mother stopped me from reading but asked me to review learned knowledge. Due to the stress of study, reading was a luxury for me at that time.

In the writing class next day, however, the magic showed up. The teacher asked us to write about our mothers. Though it was not a fiction work, the skills I learned recurred in my mind. The main idea of my composition was that my mother is a hardworking woman. I wrote about the frugal clothes and little makeup of my mother and told the story that my mother was still working while I was sleeping or playing. Surprisingly, without any ambition, my article was praised by the teacher. She said that my mother was the first living role written by me. To encourage me and stimulate other students, our teacher let me to read my composition in the front of classroom. When I was reading to my classmates, I felt like I was slightly shining and the light was recoloring my world.

I handed my article to my mother and said that it was Harry Potter’s magic which helped me to achieve this. Being moved, my mother agreed me to read two chapters every day. From that day on, I immersed totally in J.K. Rowling’s magic world. The description of Professor Snape told me how a complicated character could be hidden behind a black robe. The unique spells and languages showed me the importance of language in creating an imaginary world. And the links between some details and real history asked me to read books broadly before writing and reading. In the seventh book, the laws enacted by Voldemort to eradicate mudblood reminded me about the Nazism, which I had just learned in history class. It was the first time when I understood the hidden meanings behind the words. From then on, I have always been trying to confer my minds through my articles instead of just completing study missions. In the eighth grade, I had already overcome all the previous disadvantages and I began to take part in some writing compositions.

Though I have not gained any achievements in literacy yet, what the Harry Potter had taught me will benefit me forever. I will insist on reading broadly and not write articles until I have built completed structures. Furthermore, I wish my articles can contain more wisdom as I cumulate more and more experience.

Cover Memo

This article is about an experience of how Harry Potter helped me with my literacy writing. I would like to share what I learned from those books with others, and I succeeded by finishing this work. As for the article’s strengths, the first of all is that it is my real experience so that all the emotion I demonstrated is acquirable. Second, what I have read, or in other word I recommend, is a famous series of fiction novel that everyone should have known it before, so my experience would be easy to understand. Next, I have paid attention to give a different length to each part. As for its weakness, the rhetoric of this story may be a little simple because I think it is better to tell my own story simply. Besides, there may be few characters in my story leading to a plain plot.

I would like to take this article as an opportunity to share my experience on Harry Potter. Therefore, I want to request my responders to share their idea about this series, no matter the book or the movie. Besides, what’s your opinion on conferring a political core through fiction?

For this time, since the new books attracted me a lot and I wanted to spirit myself up, I would like to restart my reading, thinking that it could not annoy me more than my poor writing ability. Until then, I had never imagined how this reading would affect my future.

The author, J.K. Rowling, used many pages to describe the Dursleys, showing their bad tempers and how stubborn they were to be purely normal. The measure of historic parallels inspired me that I could integrate history with my articles to enrich their thoughts.

I am getting used to learn about its background and read relative articles before reading a new book. By doing so, my writing has benefitted from it as there seems to be endless wonders for me to write, which looks like a true magic. I would like adhere to the wisdom given by Harry Potter and go further on my road of literacy.

The feedback mentioned that there were some places in the article that did not explain the reason in detail and extended the argument. I added some sentences to make my article more specific and powerful. I hope that my modification of my narrative essay is a good article that readers can easily understand and feel.

Assignment: Discourse Community Research Paper( Workshop draft)

Word count:1499 words

The term “discourse community” is relatively a new concept. It was proposed by many researchers when they studied the writing and reading process from social view (Herzberg, 1986;Porter, 1988). Herzberg (1986, 1) described the concept of discourse community as follows:“The pedagogies associated with writing across the curriculum and academic English now use the notion of ‘discourse community’ to signify a cluster of ideas, that language use in a group is a form of social behavior, that discourse is a means of maintaining and extending the group’s knowledge and of initiating new members into the group, and that discourse is epistemic or constitutive of the group’s knowledge.” According to Herzberg’s theory (1986), each discourse has its own principals or conventions to maintain and expand its development.

In brief, the members who belong to the same community must have common general goals. They will use a number of mechanisms to search the information and communicate with each other. When the mechanisms expressed in language, it could form at least one genre and some specific terminologies which cannot be understood by the outsiders. Except for these necessary conditions stated above, the members of a discourse community should comprise both expertise and “novices”;And only the ratio of expertise and “novices” remained at some level could a discourse community continue to develop. These six features are coherent with each other, and the discourse community could not be established without any one of them.

Rehabilitation is a well-known discourse community form for people who have been through something unexpected in their life. A central goal of the rehabilitation center is for the participants to develop environments that support doing and talking about what they’ve been through. “Therapy”, “experience”, “recovery”, “exercise” and other professional words are the common discourses widely used in the rehabilitation discourse community. The organizers of the rehabilitation center hope to help participants relax and recover as soon as possible through kind dialogues. Participants should cooperate with the organizers as much as possible to complete a series of rehabilitation exercises and treatment methods. They will thus help more people in need through their own experience and professional rehabilitation knowledge. Therefore, strong cooperation networks are vital to the success of the rehabilitation community.

First of all, rehabilitation centers are conducive to the personal development of participants. The participants in the rehabilitation center have experienced unpleasant experiences in their past life that will have an impact on their future life, such as childhood shadow, failed career or marriage problems, which make them unconfident to the future and even unwilling to open their hearts to others. Long-term isolation and pressure have increased the risk of psychological diseases for the participants. Rehabilitation centers or rehabilitation teams are to enable these people to find their own groups, in which participants could tell others what they do not want to say to their relatives and to find people who have the same experience as themselves making them feel much more relaxed. Participants with similar experiences and successful cases can provide suggestions and help each other to get out of these obstacles as soon as possible through joint cooperation, and enable people in difficulties to get psychological and spiritual recovery. According to the investigation, the psychological and practical problems of patients communicating in clinical participants could make progress in social activities, emotions, family relations, daily life and employment (Ramona& Stephan& Lin & Wiebke& Reinhard, 2019). I did some research with a friend who often went to the rehabilitation center to recover. She revealed to me that she was often subjected to cold violence on campus, and that female students often used words to insult or provoke her, causing her to become solitary and sensitive and sometimes even want to be self-harming. But I quickly realized the problem and took the initiative to go to the rehabilitation center for psychological and psychiatric treatment. The professional medical staff in the rehabilitation center first stabilized her mood by using professional rehabilitation equipment. The other patients suffering from the same situation actively communicated with her and shared their methods and thoughts of solving such problems, which gave her great confidence in rehabilitation. Therefore, she constantly encouraged herself, began to positively communicate with the patients, and actively cooperated with the professional treatment of medical staff. Finally, in a few months, she recovered her mental and spiritual health and returned to her normal life. In short, communicating with people who have the same experience can not only express their long-standing emotions but also enlighten each other and help each other go out of the psychological shadow, which is very helpful for their psychological remodeling.

Secondly, participants who are temporarily disabled or inconvenient to move due to serious injury or serious illness can cooperate with relevant professional organizers or people with relevant experience in the rehabilitation center to quickly recover. These people often experience some accidents that cause temporary physical disability of arms and legs. However, their relatives and friends can’t ask for leave for a long time to take special care of them, so their relatives and friends will generally look for a safe and reliable rehabilitation center for them when they leave the hospital when they recover their basic communication ability and consciousness of judgment with people. The relatives will send them to the rehabilitation center in the daytime for professional rehabilitation training. This kind of participants can’t take care of themselves completely in the process of rehabilitation training, so they need to do relevant rehabilitation training actions with the help of other participants. Generally speaking, for participants with such mobility difficulties, two additional participants are required to cooperate with them to help them successfully complete their rehabilitation. First of all, there should be a person who is responsible for helping him keep balance beside him, so as to ensure his safety and prevent the occurrence of secondary accidents. Another participant needs to provide him with relevant rehabilitation training actions, and give him corresponding guidance and correction when he does so, so as to ensure that such physically disabled participants can recover the movement ability of normal people as soon as possible as they planed, and actively prevent muscle atrophy or limb weakness and other disabling conditions (Wang& Zhang, 2017).

Thirdly, they can gain more professional knowledge about rehabilitation through cooperation and sharing. To some extent, rehabilitation belongs to the field of medicine, which is very strange and complex for most people without medical background knowledge. The contents of rehabilitation cover a large variety, including psychological and spiritual fields, physical activities and coordination and other aspects. There will be professional rehabilitation terms and rehabilitation knowledge in each field mentioned above. Useful professional rehabilitation knowledge can greatly protect the health of everyone. The organizer with relevant rehabilitation professional knowledge can provide participants with professional knowledge according to the category of rehabilitation field each time they gather with participants (Khorshidi &Marembo &Aickelin, 2019). Before sharing the knowledge, the professional sharer in his professional field can inform other participants of the relevant content they want to share in advance, so that other participants can preview the relevant knowledge in his field in advance, and then they can sort out their own questions, so each participant in rehabilitation center can better master the relevant professional rehabilitation knowledge. In addition, each participant may have specific personal rehabilitation training experience in a certain aspect, so everyone can share their own rehabilitation experience with each other. They will explain some obscure terms of professional rehabilitation combined with relevant examples in the most accessible language. Everyone thus can accurately experience the rehabilitation process and rehabilitation feelings in different fields by this method. It is widely admitted that each participant can understand the different levels of rehabilitation treatment expertise as comprehensively as possible through cooperation and expertise sharing, so they can help more people recover and maintain their health.

Rehabilitation treatment is of great significance to its participants or patients. Although rehabilitation treatment can’t help the patients to get rid of the damage of disease or accidents to the body completely, it can help the patients to get rid of the influence of the disease as much as possible and recover the normal work and quality of life by enhancing the body function and increasing the patients’ self-confidence. In recent years, the rehabilitation center has been warmly welcomed by people all over the world. Participants with different rehabilitation backgrounds participating in rehabilitation groups can help enrich rehabilitation knowledge in different fields. They will gradually form professional rehabilitation knowledge, so as to help patients recover quickly. It is because the relevant participants and organizers of the rehabilitation center who work together make more people trust the rehabilitation center. They are willing to send their closest people to the relevant personnel of the rehabilitation center for care, and timely ask them about the rehabilitation progress of the patient and express their gratitude to the relevant personnel after the patient is fully recovered. Therefore, strong cooperation networks are vital to the success of the rehabilitation community.

Cover Memo

I think the paper is a tough but interesting process for me since I need to study the community by my experience. Although I participated relevant interviews and short observations, I still think my knowledge is not enough. I searched the relevant TV plays and learned about the characters’ situation, interpersonal relationships and the life impact of such psychology on their identities in the plays, furthermore, I visited my friends and asked them if they had ever participated in the discourse community, and finally confirmed the rehabilitation center, which is of writing value and also of understanding and research value. How to write an argumentative paper logically is not easy. Although there are inevitable shortcomings, such as insufficient reference resources and fewer data sources, which make the article not convincing, it is also beneficial. Because of the lack of sufficient data, we have to think of other ways to make it up. For example, in terms of logic, from small aspects to large aspects, from the influence on individuals to the influence on society and others, I should make my expression more consistent with the theme of the argumentative essay. In terms of words and logic, I have done my best to be strict and consistent, to carry on smoothly, to make the logic of the article conform to the track of everyone’s thinking, to make the article easier to understand, and to be more descriptive. In the next writing, we should pay attention to the collection of data and the application of academic articles to make the articles more academic.

(2019). My own survey with the participant in the rehabilitation center.

Assignment: Discourse Community Research Paper( Final draft)

Word count: 1616 words

The term “discourse community” is relatively a new concept. It was proposed by many researchers when they studied the writing and reading process from social view (Herzberg, 1986;Porter, 1988). Herzberg (1986, 1) described the concept of discourse community as follows:“The pedagogies associated with writing across the curriculum and academic English now use the notion of ‘discourse community’ to signify a cluster of ideas, that language use in a group is a form of social behavior, that discourse is a means of maintaining and extending the group’s knowledge and of initiating new members into the group, and that discourse is epistemic or constitutive of the group’s knowledge.” According to Herzberg’s theory (1986), each discourse has its principals or conventions to maintain and expand its development.

In brief, the members who belong to the same community must have common general goals. They will use several mechanisms to search for information and communicate with each other.

I choose rehabilitation as a community of discourse because I have participated in this community to learn more about rehabilitation and help my grandparents keep healthy. I found that this community can bring people both physical and psychological recovery, which is of great significance to people, so I want to choose this community to let people know more. Rehabilitation is a well-known discourse community form for people who have been through something unexpected in their life. A central goal of the rehabilitation center is for the participants to develop environments that support doing and talking about what they’ve been through so that the patients could gain mental and physical health quickly. In the following paragraphs, I will explain from the perspectives of psychological health, physical health and rehabilitation knowledge respectively about how rehabilitation centers work together to help people regain health.

On the one hand, effective cooperation networks in rehabilitation center focuses on the recovery of physical health, which accomplishes the same aim of the the same group of patients- recovering. Participants who are temporarily disabled or inconvenient to move due to serious injury or serious illness can cooperate with relevant professional organizers or people with relevant experience in the rehabilitation center to quickly recover. Generally speaking, for participants with such mobility difficulties, two additional participants are required to cooperate with them to help them complete their rehabilitation (My Survey, 2019). When one is responsible for ensuring his safety and prevent the occurrence of secondary accidents, another participant needs to provide him with relevant rehabilitation training actions, and give him corresponding guidance and correction to ensure that such physically disabled participants can recover the movement ability of normal people as soon as possible and actively prevent muscle atrophy or limb weakness and other disabling conditions (Wang & Wang & Xing & Mei & Zhao & Zhang, 2017). Except for the network of patients and physicians, the cooperation of related departments provides the patients the most effective treatment and rehabilitation training, which creates a professional recover community with professional skills. When one is sent to the rehabilitation center, he will accept medicine checking in all departments and decide a rehabilitation program, which are decided by all physicians’ effort. For example, when an orthopaedics patient is sent to the hospital, his condition will be checked comprehensively and accept the recovering plan from not only department of orthopaedics, but also department of surgery and other related departments (Health & Social Trust, 2019).

Second, strong cooperation networks in rehabilitation center are conducive to the personal development of participants especially in mental health. According to the investigation, the psychological and practical problems of patients communicating in clinical participants could make progress in social activities, emotions, family relations, daily life and employment (Ramona& Stephan& Lin & Wiebke& Reinhard, 2019). I interviewed a participant in the rehabilitation center not long ago to learn from her rehabilitation experience that the rehabilitation center not only help her with her physical illness but also improving her mental state (My Survey, 2019). The interviewee replied that she had a failed marriage two years ago. Her husband betrayed her and spent all her property on gambling. After the divorce, she once fell into a mental disorder confronted with the loss of both wealth and husband. Her family realized the seriousness of the problem and promptly sent her to the rehabilitation center for psychological and spiritual treatment. Rehabilitation centers or rehabilitation teams are to enable these people to find their groups, in which participants could tell others what they do not want to say to their relatives and to find people who have the same experience as themselves making them feel much more relaxed. Participants with similar experiences and successful cases can provide suggestions and help each other to get out of these obstacles as soon as possible through cooperation, and enable people in difficulties to get psychological and spiritual recovery. In short, communicating with people who have the same experience can not only express their long-standing emotions but also enlighten each other and help each other go out of the psychological shadow, which is very helpful for their psychological remodeling.

Third, people can gain more professional knowledge about rehabilitation through cooperation and sharing. Useful professional rehabilitation knowledge can greatly protect the health of everyone. The organizer with relevant rehabilitation professional knowledge can provide participants with professional knowledge according to the category of rehabilitation field each time they gather with participants (Khorshidi & Marembo & Aickelin, 2019). Before sharing the knowledge, the professional sharer in his professional field can inform other participants of the relevant content they want to share in advance, so that other participants can preview the relevant knowledge in his field, and then they can sort out their questions, so each participant in rehabilitation center can better master the relevant professional rehabilitation knowledge. Besides, each participant may have specific personal rehabilitation training experience in a certain aspect, so everyone can share their own rehabilitation experience with each other. They will explain some obscure terms of professional rehabilitation combined with relevant examples in the most accessible language. Everyone thus can accurately experience the rehabilitation process and rehabilitation feelings in different fields by this method. It is widely admitted that each participant can understand the different levels of rehabilitation treatment expertise as comprehensively as possible through cooperation and expertise sharing, so they can help more people recover and maintain their health.

Rehabilitation treatment is of great significance to its participants or patients because of its cooperation system. They will gradually form professional rehabilitation knowledge, to help patients recover quickly.

When I got this article at the beginning, I have two obvious questions: first, what kind of discourse community is the most representative. The second question is how to write the argumentative essay more reasonably. I did not specifically participate in the rehabilitation community. I only learn a little knowledge and draw the above conclusion through the relevant interviews and online readings. I searched the relevant TV plays and learned about the characters’ situation, interpersonal relationships and the life impact of such psychology on their identities in the plays. I visited my friends and asked them if they had ever participated in the discourse community, and finally confirmed the rehabilitation center, which is of writing value and also of understanding and research value. For the second question, I solve it through inquiring and studying the characteristics of argumentative writing and through previous experience in writing argumentative writing. I have written an article that is appropriate to the characteristics of argumentative writing. Portfolio Reflective Essay

In the beginning of this course, I did not think it could be of benefit to me at all, frankly, I took it only for my grades, just for the sake of passing and I thought I would face a lot of difficulties in this course. Truly, I had not figured out that UWP 1 is one of the useful courses that will propel me and enable me to do other courses in my upper division classes. This came to my realization when I learnt that treating UWP 1 as just a requirement could be the biggest mistake I was almost doing to myself and overall grade at school. Frankly, I have learnt a lot from UWP 1 and I am proud of taking this class seriously. Evidently, the learning outcomes focused by this course is widely spread to other courses that I am taking. Moreover, the writing assessments that are in this course are very useful since they will enable successfully take other courses that require writing.in addition to the outcomes of UWP1, I have learnt that a perfect writing must put in consideration the audience awareness, and if I had more time to do this course I would write countless writings that would be satisfying to any audience.

As it is in the syllabus, rhetorical knowledge is the first learning outcome of UWP 1. For sure, I have learned and understood how to use different genres and distinguish intended audience in my work for various contexts. Before I gained the rhetoric knowledge, I could not differentiate audience and tone and these are important aspects to consider while crafting a narrative. Now that I have successfully undertaken UWP 1 I can evaluate the concept of tone and I can use this perception in writing a good narrative. Genre is one of the most important concepts I learnt in this course. Earlier before taking this course, I had not realized that genre is very important since it exists a long wit communication process More so, I can comfortably use rhetorical appeals which are pathos, ethos and logos as the modes of persuasions in my writing, which can increase the credibility of my work. Discourse community work has also helped me in a big margin, the “Discourse Community Research Paper”  is also very important in this course, this is because it covers almost everything learnt in this course.. I have understood the meaning of a discourse community and also I learnt that people of the same discourse community have a similar goal and they help each other to reach the goals. For example, the students who are taking UWP 1 are in one discourse community, we have the same goals of becoming good writers and also we help one another in the peer reviews so that we can reach our goals together. Throughout the discourse community project reviews, I noted that I am supposed to give more details and background information about my discourse community because other fellow students were not easily understanding my community. This made me put a lot of efforts in introducing my topic and making strong arguments on my discourse community so that everyone reading my work can understand easily what information I want to pass. For example, I added a lot of detailed information and a clear thesis statement on my introduction part so that any reader will have a clear clue of what I am writing about. Most of the articles such the “narrative assignment” were very important in my journey I have learnt a lot in terms of tone and genre. Another example is the article “Shitty First Drafts”, I have learnt that nearly everybody experiences a lot of struggles when starting to write. Also, I understood that a lot of writers, even the successful writers always faces a lot of challenges in writing and that is why a first draft is very important and it helps a writer to come up with a god second draft. Moreover, I have learnt that first draft can be written in a careless manner so long as the final draft will be good.

If I had more time for this course, I could improve my writing skills and upgrade them to a professional level. This is because, throughout this course, I have completed a lot of work in aims of improving my reading and writing knowledge. For my revision process, if granted a chance, I will focus on having strong arguments and idea in my work. By doing this, I will be able to revise and improve on effectiveness and coherence of my writing. Moreover, my peers are very important in correcting me and I am ready to follow what they urge me. For example, I have to focus more on organization and structure of my work. Nevertheless, rom the readings and articles that I had gone through I can truly see that I have reached my goal, I and I could add more knowledge if I had a chance to continue with UWP 1. The first readings, from my perspective were the most vital in UWP 1 since they formed the base for this course. Generally, I have carefully applied nearly all the skills that are taught in the articles that we have been reading. This have made me save a lot of time while writing, I am also able to eliminate mistakes in my papers and also I have learnt how to arrange my work in a sensible manner. That is why I appreciate any feedback be it from the teacher or my peers. Therefore, I believe I am capable of doing a good revision for the sake of my improvement.

In overall, I am proud to say that everything that I have learnt from UWP 1 will help me in school and even outside school. From everything that I have learnt, I am confident that I have improved my writing skills. Now, in future I am ready to consider audience, tones, purpose, mode and genre in my future writing. The academic articles that we have read will be helpful in my leaning habits. For instance, Karen Rosenberg’s “Reading Games: Strategies for Reading Scholarly Sources” have helped me in elaborating the authors purposes and analyzing articles in a serious way. As Rosenberg said, analysis of rhetorical concepts such as tone and audience can be useful in understanding the authors message. This will be helpful to me when analyzing research papers, texts and articles in school. More so, with the writing knowledge, I can start my own publication and help others to gain writing and reading skills.

The purpose of this portfolio reflection essay is to synthesis all the work that I have been doing in UWP 1. This essay will also prove that I have met all the learning outcomes of this course. Writing this reflective essay will help me transfer my learning to a new context in the future. In this portfolio reflection essay, I will make an argument on how I have met the learning outcomes of UWP 1, added specific and detailed examples to explain the suggestions given by peer review among my classmates, making my point more powerful, state possible further revisions that I can do, and also state how learning the course UWP 1 can be applicable in my future learning contexts.
